Travelling through this region in mid August (late winter/early spring) I was blessed with wildflowers and abundant wildlife, pristine clear blue southern ocean, white sandy beaches, fun 4x4 trails and spectacular scenery.

The Nullarbor Plain is a vast, mostly treeless, arid region in southern Australia, stretching about 1,100 kilometers across South Australia and Western Australia.

Although the plain is largely flat and quite arid, I was blessed with wildflowers and abundant wildlife when I drove through it in mid August.

Why drive across the Nullarbor Plain on the bitumen when there are so many wonderful 4x4 tracks to explore and are where I experienced the most spectacular scenery.

Driving from West to East the first trail I took was the first track towards the ocean after Balladonia.  Although I don't recall seeing a name for the track on an official signpost, on my GPS map it was shown as Baxter Cliffs Track and takes you down to Point Culver Beach.

The 4x4 track is not difficult to drive, but was relatively slow going and it took me 1hr 20mins to drive 32kms before I decided to stop for the night.

The following morning I woke to a misty cool morning (pictutre above) and learnt that it was another 70kms driving to reach the ocean.

The track alternated between boggy clay, soft sand and sharp rocks and was very slow going, even with my tyre pressure down low enough.

At one point I timed how far I was able to drive in 2 hours, it was only 24kms!

Yet, the drive was worth it!
