Oodnadatta Track & Lake Eyre

Loving the Oodnadatta Track

In contrast to the Birdsville Track I loved the Oodnadatta Track. The road surface was in better condition and the scenery was more varied and quite stunning.

Kati-Thanda-Lake-Eyre National Park Stunning.

I found a little track leading off the 'road' towards Lake Eyre South and wandered by foot out onto the lake. Camel prints all over the white crystalline salt surface. Sunset at the lake, beautiful light. Quiet secluded camping behind a ridge of land sheltering me from the cold winds during the night. Halligan Bay Its a 60km dirt track (well, everything is dirt tracks out here) to Halligan Bay. The track was corrugated and bouncy but the scenery along the way makes the track worth taking. The views at Halligan Bay are gorgeous, but I have to say that I actually preferred the view and the walk-on-the-lake experience that I had at Lake Eyre South. Popular camping ground and met some nice folks the night I stayed there. Oodnadatta Roadhouse Pink pink pink. The roadhouse is pink, and so is most of the décor inside. The service is excellent, they have a reasonable supply of food, including fresh (but very expensive) produce and they cook up a mean feed. There is cell cover at the roadhouse so you can phone your mum and let you know you are well, as I did. Hi Mum! How long did it take me to drive the Oodnadatta Track? Two days. Night one I camped by Lake Eyre South in a little stealth camp site I found and then night two I camped at Halligan Bay camp site. There are other official spots to camp along the way, but I think 2 days was a reasonable but not too rushed pace. Do I recommend driving the Oodnadatta Track? Yes, very much so.

Stunning scenery, good track

Let me share with you what driving on the Oodnadatta Track & walking on Lake Eyre is like in this little video clip:

From here I journey to Dalhousie Springs.
